Luana Maso Talks ‘Down The Rabbit Hole’ EP

We caught up with singer/songwriter Luana Maso to get the inside scoop on all she’s been up to! The rising artist, who recently released her Down The Rabbit Hole EP, dished on her latest project, the song she wishes she wrote and more! Read the exclusive interview below:

Let’s talk about your song “Legends”! How did it come about for you? What’s the story behind it?
I wrote this song with three friends from Nashville: Jared Anderson, Mckenna Flaherty and Sarah Troy Clark.
I was inspired by a recording I had made with guitar months before, that I then played on piano for a while, and I had come up with this melody that expressed my feelings at the time: wanting to tell someone how disappointed I was that things didn’t work out fine. I sent my ideas to Jared, Mckenna and Sarah, and this song is what we ended up with.

How did you come up with the concept for the music video?
I thought about the words of the song and this metaphor of kings and queens and decided that the video had to be filmed around a castle. We tried to portray the story of two people who grew up together and then had to part ways, so you can see the different versions of me and the guy, first as kids, then as adolescents and in the end I’m left there alone.

Your released your EP, Down the Rabbit Hole, earlier this year – what was the creating/recording process like for you?
It was very smooth, working with Jared Anderson made everything very easy. We were always on the same page and he helped me give my best in the studio. Having a producer who knows what he’s doing and knows how to guide you while you’re recording makes a huge difference.

Is there a track on there that holds the most significance for you?
Probably Let The Rain. Writing that song really helped me get through a tough time.

Growing up, which artists do you remember loving? Do those artists still influence your sound?
I remember singing songs by Shania Twain with my aunt when I was about 5, and growing up I’ve always been inspired by Sara Bareilles. She’s definitely influenced my sound.

What’s the songwriting process usually like for you?
I usually write a melody over a chord progression that I like, and then I write the lyrics. But it also sometimes happens that I have a few lines of text and I get an idea for a melody from that. I’ve also recently started using another technique, which is writing from a prompt. You have a set of words or a title, and you write a story from that.

What’s a song you absolutely love that you wish you wrote?
A song called “In your atmosphere” by John Mayer.

When it comes to stage presence, which artist(s) do you admire?
Camila Cabello. There’s this video of her performing “I know what you did last summer” with Shawn Mendes and I think anybody will agree with me when I say that it’s just amazing!

What’s been the highlight of your year so far?
Releasing my first songs into the world for everybody to hear!

What’s something you’re hoping to cross off your bucket list?
Having one of my songs featured in one of my favorite TV shows.

What are some of your current obsessions? (ex: books/movies/tv shows)
A tv show called “The Affair”, I’m waiting for the 4th season to begin!! Also, any book, tv show or movie that deals with mystery.

Which artists/songs have you been loving lately?
A new artist named Caroline Spence, she’s such a great songwriter! I love her album Spades and Roses. I’ve also been listening to a lot of music by Jason Isbell and Lori McKenna lately.

When you’re not busy working on music, what are you usually up to?
Usually hiking, reading a book or cuddling my guinea pig!

Fast facts:
1. I love eggs
2. I brush my teeth more often than I should
3. I’m always wrapped in a blanket
4. I read tons of books
5. Autumn is my favorite season!
