We caught up with indie-pop songstress, Jules, to get the inside scoop on all she’s been up to! The rising artist, who recently released her debut single “Eyes Shut,” dished on how the single came about, the artists that inspire her sound and more! Read the exclusive interview below to get to know your new fave!
Let’s talk about “Eyes Shut” – how did the song come about for you? What’s the story behind it?
The song idea came about a few years ago when a very close friend of mine was struggling with insomnia. I decided to write a song for her from her point of view, but I never really felt that melody did justice for the words. Fast forward a year later; I’d started experiencing horrible repetitive nightmares that made it almost impossible to sleep. After really experiencing this idea of not being able to fall asleep, I felt the need to write about it. So when I was back in the studio this past February, with my producer and co-writer, Richard Harris, he had an awesome track I was trying to write to. The first day we tried writing to the track, we were really stuck. But when I got back to my hotel room — I was on the bathroom floor trying to concentrate on the track while my Dad was in the hotel room. Then suddenly, the concept of sleepless nights came back to me and it fit the melody of the song like a glove. The next morning me and Richard decided to take the idea and run with it.
When should fans be expecting the music video?
Coming soon 🙂
Growing up, which artists do you remember loving? Do they still influence your sound today?
I remember being so inspired by Cheap Trick and Aerosmith. Their songs and songwriting skills have definitely shaped me into the songwriter I am today. I also remember listening to a lot of Taylor Swift and Switchfoot when I became a teenager and they less influence my sound, but still inspire me in the songwriting.
What’s the songwriting process usually like for you?
Well, I can definitely say that it’s different every time and that’s what’s so fun and great about songwriting. But most of the time I start with melody on a piano or guitar. Then I develop a concept and the hook and then go and write the rest of it from there.
Is there a song that you absolutely love that you wish you wrote?
My favorite song ever written is “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer and it would’ve been a honor to have written that song, cause it just brings back so much nostalgia from when I was younger.
When it comes to stage presence, which artists are you inspired by?
Oh that’s a tough one. People can say all they want, but Taylor Swift has incredible stage presence. I love how charismatic she is on stage and how she connects with her audience. Other artists whose stage presence inspires me are Bruno Mars, and of course, Beyoncé.
What do you hope fans take away from you and your music?
I really want them to know that they’re not alone. Especially with this song I intentionally created it so that it doesn’t have a resolution at the end because I’m all about the truth. And the truth is: sometimes people’s suffering doesn’t end. I didn’t want to be another song that says: don’t worry you’ll get over it eventually – because sometimes you don’t. But I also really want to highlight that they (my fans) are not alone and there is help out there. As for my other music I want my fans to take away the importance of authenticity.
What’s the best way for fans to get your attention on social media?
Either Tweet me or my Instagram: @sheisjules
How important is to you to use your platform for good?
Very important. It’s my duty as a songwriter and creator to make people aware of things like in the case my song “Eyes Shut”, mental health.
What’s been the highlight of your year so far?
All the creating I’ve been able to do this past summer. I haven’t written this many songs – ever. It was so freeing for me. The people I work with are amazing and it’s so incredible to channel things from my life into music.
What’s something you’re still hoping to cross off your list this year?
Performing and meet more incredible fans.
Which artist(s) have you had on repeat lately?
Lorde’s newest album, Melodrama is amazing. It’s what’s been on repeat for the last 6 or 7 months, haha.
How would you describe your personal style? Fave stores to shop at?
Spontaneous for sure. I’m all about looking great but feeling comfortable. You can never go wrong with H&M but I’m really digging this store called Ella, which is easier on your wallet but also good material.
If you could raid any celebs closet, whose would it be?
Blake Lively. Definitely.
